If you enjoy plums but want to try something a little different, Gages are certainly the tree for you. On first appearance Greengage may not appear like the most exciting fruit but it has the most remarkable flavour, the pale yellow-green fruit has soft sweet flesh with a rich sugary delicious flovour. The fruits are similar to a plum in shape but are far juicier than any plum variety. They are fantastic straight from the tree, but are equally as delicious when utilised in cooking or preserving. Greengage requires a pollinator we would recommend Czar & Opal to cross pollinate with.
Prunus domestica Greengage thrives best on free draining soils and both fruit flavour and size is enhanced by keeping weed and lawn competition away from the base of the tree. Fertilizing with a general purpose plant food in the spring is also beneficial. I
